Improving the Usability of Organizational Data Systems

For research data repositories, web interfaces are usually the primary, if not only, method that users have to interact with repository systems. Data often search, discover, understand, access, and sometimes use directly through interfaces. Given sub-par user can reduce ability of locate, obtain, data, it is important consider how repositories’ be evaluated improved in order ensure useful successful interactions. This paper discusses usability assessment techniques being applied improve functioning at National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR). At NCAR, a new suite system tools developed collectively called NCAR Digital Asset Services Hub (DASH). Usability evaluation been used throughout DASH design implementation cycles systems work well together intended base. By applying study, prototype, competitive analysis, journey mapping, heuristic evaluation, Search Repository experiences provide examples benefit from principles techniques. Integrating into workflows helps optimize systems’ overall experience.
